Standards Board Scraps IPLP, Portfolio Requirements

Standards Board Scraps IPLP, Portfolio Requirements

Moments ago, the Vermont Standards Board for Professional Educators voted to scrap portfolios and Individual Professional Learning Plans from the teacher relicensing process. The unanimous decision is a huge victory for common sense, and capped a remarkable day in which standards board members realized that Vermont’s current system wasn’t serving teachers or education well. It also is a testament to the outpouring of emails you sent board members over the last two days about Vermont's relicensure process.

In addition to dropping the IPLP and portfolio requirements, the board decided to shrink the time between license renewals to five years from seven. They also voted to reduce the required amount of credits or hours of professional learning from nine credits or 135 hours to six credits or 90 hours. The changes will not take affect immediately, and are subject to a formal rules-making process. We will have all the details for you in a number of days, including how this decision affects renewals already in process.
